Château Lafaurie Peyraguey

Bommes, France

Four Centuries of Excellence in Bordeaux

Set atop the gentle heights of Bommes in the Bordeaux region, Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey embodies centuries of winemaking heritage refined by enduring artistry. Its story begins in the medieval era, with remnants of a stone fortress—its gatehouse and towers—standing as silent witnesses to a history that stretches back to the 13th century. These original foundations, built from local village stone, echo the estate’s longstanding connection to the land.

In 1618, a new chapter unfolded when Sieur Raymond Peyraguey acquired the site and recognized its potential for crafting fine sweet wines. The estate’s prominence rose further when Pierre Lafaurie joined it a decade later, lending his name and expanding its vineyards. Their legacy culminated in 1855, when Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey earned the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé—an honor that placed it among the foremost estates of Sauternes, just after revered names like Château d’Yquem.

The vineyards extend across about eighteen hectares on Sauternes’ highly regarded third gravel terrace, resting some seventy meters above sea level. Spread across parcels in Bommes, Sauternes, Fargues, and Preignac, the land includes storied plots such as “L’Enclos” and “Maisons Rouges”—the latter having served as a Roman-era stopping point for travelers. Rich layers of gravel and clay over limestone sculpt a terroir that imparts elegance, complexity, and unforgettable aromatic depth to the wines.

Grapes are harvested with meticulous care, often in multiple passes to ensure only perfectly botrytized fruit is selected. The vineyard is dominated by Sémillon, complemented by smaller amounts of Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. These grapes, paired with deliberate harvest and winemaking practices, give rise to wines known for their finesse, structure, and luminous honeyed depth.

The estate’s story continued to evolve thanks to its modern patrons. In 2014, visionary entrepreneur Silvio Denz—known for his devotion to craftsmanship—took stewardship of the property. He initiated significant restorations and began weaving together the worlds of wine, art, and hospitality. This vision culminated in 2018 with the unveiling of a boutique luxury hotel and a refined restaurant, designed to celebrate the estate’s legacy through immersive experiences.

By 2019, these offerings earned membership among elite hospitality circles, and the restaurant quickly achieved Michelin-star status—later earning a second star. Today, guests can enjoy dishes where the estate’s wines are not merely served alongside meals, but creatively infused into them—using vine leaves, grapeseed oil, and even savoring cocktails based on Sauternes. The experience blends culinary innovation with terroir-driven authenticity.

Beyond its signature sweet wine, the estate also produces a second cuvée, along with two dry whites, born from the same vineyard terroir and crafted with equal care. Each bottle reflects the estate’s unwavering dedication to quality, balance, and expression of place.

In recent years, the estate’s ownership transitioned to a heritage crystal house, which now guides its artistic and cultural vision. While the wines remain at its heart, the broader experience—through hospitality and design—has flourished under this stewardship.

At Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey, time moves with measured grace. Stone walls, ancient vignettes, and modern sensibilities converge here, inviting visitors to experience a legacy that is both historic and alive. It’s a place where every bottle, recipe, and moment in the château’s gardens tells a story, inviting you to taste history, artistry, and the refined spirit of Sauternes.
