Bekaa Valley, Lebanon

For centuries, the picturesque landscapes of Tanail and Zahle have been witness to a remarkable journey of cultivation, discovery, and transformation. It was in the year 1857 that a group of Jesuit monks embarked on an endeavor that would forever alter the viticultural landscape of Lebanon. These devoted monks, recognizing the untapped potential of the Ksara terroir, began cultivating the land, setting the stage for the birth of Lebanon’s iconic .
.
The monks’ voyage of discovery led them to the cultivation of vineyards, which yielded the creation of Lebanon’s first dry wine. This marked the inception of Château Ksara’s storied legacy, a name that would become synonymous with excellence in Lebanese winemaking. The journey continued in 1898, when the monks stumbled upon a hidden treasure beneath the earth – a 2-kilometer cave dating back to the Roman era. This natural marvel possessed the ideal conditions for wine aging, characterized by constant humidity and temperature throughout the year. The cave was ingeniously repurposed into a wine cellar, becoming the sanctuary where Château Ksara’s wines would mature gracefully over time.
.
Since 1990, Zafer Chaoui has guided Château Ksara’s destinies as its CEO. Simultaneously, he has held the position of President of the Union Vinicole du Liban, further solidifying his influence within Lebanon’s vinicultural sphere. In 1991, Château Ksara set forth on a groundbreaking journey by introducing the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Chardonnay, and Merlot grape varietals. This audacious move defied all odds, as even the local farmers were skeptical about the viability of these varietals in the Bekaa terroir.
.
Through the annals of time, Château Ksara’s legacy has transcended the realms of winemaking, encompassing tales of resilience, innovation, and passion. The continuation of its story is a testament to the dedication of those who have shepherded its journey, from the pioneering Jesuit monks to the visionary leaders of today. As Château Ksara continues to craft exceptional wines that reflect the spirit of the land, it stands as a living testament to the convergence of history, nature, and the art of winemaking.
