Château Fortia

Châteauneuf - du - Pape, France

Château Fortia, with its rich history dating back to the 18th century, stands as a testament to the legacy of winemaking in the renowned Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. The estate’s story begins with manuscripts from that era, documenting a small farm that occupied the very land on which the current château proudly stands. In the middle of the 18th century, Hercule Paul de Fortia acquired the estate, marking the turning point for its reputation as a producer of exceptional wines. It was under his ownership that the name “La Fortiasse” first appeared on maps, and the estate began its journey towards greatness.

Paul Antoine de Fortia, the son of Hercule Paul, inherited the estate and made significant contributions to its expansion. He enlarged the vineyard area and constructed new buildings, further cementing Château Fortia’s position as a leading wine estate. Throughout the 19th century, the property changed hands several times, with the Seguin and Gondi families playing integral roles in its continued success.

Situated in the heart of the prestigious Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation in the southern Rhône Valley, Château Fortia is intricately connected to the history and heritage of the region. The fame and commercialization of both the village and its wines are intertwined with the influence of the Avignon Papacy, which greatly contributed to their renown.

Benefiting from the mistral winds and a warm, arid climate, the vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape yield powerful, tannic, and concentrated wines. The unique terroir of the appellation showcases three key characteristics: Cretaceous-era limestone soils, Tertiary-era sandy soils and sandstones, and terraces composed of quartzite pebbles. This blend of soil components, combined with the 13 authorized grape varieties, allows for the production of a diverse range of wines within the appellation.

Covering 36 hectares, of which 32 are dedicated to vine cultivation, Château Fortia harmoniously balances vineyards with wooded areas, flowered borders, gardens, and a vegetable garden. This unbroken property, nestled in the locality of “La Fortiasse,” south of the village, contributes to the overall ecosystem equilibrium on the estate.

The vineyards, located on gently sloping south-facing slopes, benefit from rounded pebbles that play a vital role in grape cultivation. These stones absorb the warmth of the sun during the day and release it at night, fostering optimal ripening and concentration in the grapes.

With an average vine age of 30 years, the estate predominantly cultivates red grape varieties. Grenache noir, the emblematic grape of the appellation, thrives alongside Syrah and Mourvèdre. Among the white grape varieties, Roussanne, Clairette, and Grenache Blanc grace the vineyards of Château Fortia.

In their pursuit of expressing the unique terroir, the estate employs methods that respect the vines, skillfully blending the grape varieties to enhance the wines, and a delicate aging process that allows each grape’s distinct characteristics to shine. From this bountiful and complex terroir, generously blessed with sunshine and refreshed by the mistral winds, Château Fortia gathers the finest fruits of their labor and passion. It is a testament to their unwavering commitment to producing wines that truly reflect the essence of their remarkable vineyard.
