Located in the captivating landscapes of the Argens plain, the estate of Astros boasts a rich history dating back to the 13th century. While traces of Roman civilization can be found on the grounds, it was during this era that Templar Knights settled in this fertile land, cultivating it as a Templar farmhouse.
The legacy of the Templars continued until the Knights of Malta took over the domain after the Templar Order’s eradication by Philippe Le Bel in 1314. In the 17th century, the initial farm underwent a transformation when the Knights of Malta turned it into a Commandery, erecting the first cellar at Astros in 1637.

The stones that form the foundation of Astros stand as a testament to the passion and dedication of those who toiled on this land, nurturing vineyards, olive groves, cereal crops, fig trees, and livestock. Astros not only served as a dwelling but also as a place of reverence, hosting numerous religious edifices throughout its history. Among them, the Chapel of St. Lambert, built in the 17th century, remains a site of wonder, housing a miraculous spring with renowned healing properties.
Throughout the centuries, Astros witnessed changes in ownership, from becoming national property during the French Revolution to being acquired by Maximin Martin, a prominent soap maker from Marseille, in 1802. Martin’s grandson, Marc Maximin Martin, left an indelible mark on the estate by constructing a magnificent Château inspired by Tuscan villas in 1860.

Eventually, the estate found its way into the hands of Bernard Maurel, the great-grandson of Joseph Maurel, who inherited the land from his cousin, Marc Maximin Martin. In 1963, Bernard Maurel revitalized the estate, introducing new grape varieties and constructing a modern cellar near the Château, which led to the production of their first AOC Côtes-de-Provence wine in 1970. Specializing in rosé wines, Astros embraced its unique character and terroir.
Today, the legacy continues with Bruno Maurel, an ordained priest, representing the eighth generation of the family. Guided by his unwavering passion for the estate, Bruno, together with his nephews and nieces, manages the family business.
In 2021, Château d’Astros embarked on a transformative journey towards organic farming, a testament to the family’s deep-rooted commitments and convictions. The estate’s ethos centers on gentle methods that allow nature to speak, enabling the fruit and terroir to express their true essence. Spanning across 198 acres, the vineyards flourish with a diverse array of grape varieties, including Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Rolle, Caladoc, and Carignan.

Every practice, from meticulous pruning to selective harvesting, follows the natural cycle, honoring the rhythm of the fruit and unveiling its most exquisite expression in the wines. Astros epitomizes the beauty of nature—harmonious, vibrant, and alive. It encapsulates the radiance of the sun, providing instant well-being and a sense of harmony.
