Borie-Manoux

Bordeaux, France

Borie-Manoux, a distinguished négociant house, wine producer, and prominent wine merchant group, has been captivating wine enthusiasts worldwide with its exceptional offerings. Based in Bordeaux, this renowned firm has a remarkable presence in over 90 countries across the globe. Its rich history dates back to 1870 when Pierre Borie established the company in Pauillac. Recognizing the potential for growth, Borie-Manoux later relocated to Bordeaux in the 1940s, a move that presented numerous opportunities for expansion and development.

Under the visionary leadership of Eugène Borie and Emile Borie, the company underwent a transformation and became known as Eugène Borie Frères. In pursuit of autonomy and a desire for excellence, Borie-Manoux constructed new cellars in 1901. This marked a significant milestone for the company as it also acquired ownership of Château Caronne Sainte-Gemme, located in Haut-Médoc.

Throughout its history, Borie-Manoux has remained a family-owned business, managed and nurtured by the esteemed Castéja family across multiple generations. Today, it stands as one of the few independent negotiating houses in the Bordeaux region. Proudly holding ownership of more than 10 esteemed châteaux, Borie-Manoux showcases its commitment to quality and craftsmanship.

Among its notable châteaux is the esteemed Château Batailley, one of the oldest estates in the Médoc. As a Fifth Growth classified in the Bordeaux Classification of 1855, Château Batailley boasts a rich heritage. Its vineyards, comprising vines averaging 40 years in age, produce a superb Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wine. Situated on a 57-hectare (141-acre) property, the estate features silica and gravel soils, fostering the growth of Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc varietals. Annually, approximately 300,000 bottles of this flagship wine are carefully crafted, showcasing the essence of Bordeaux’s wine making traditions.

Throughout the 20th century, Borie-Manoux expanded its reach by acquiring several Bordeaux wine merchant houses, including Turpin Frères, Henri Moreau, and Albert Duverger. Additionally, the company holds a majority share of Drouet Frères in the Loire region, renowned for its production of white, red, and rosé wines.

Recognizing the importance of embracing digital platforms, the Castéja family embarked on a new journey by establishing La Grande Cave, an e-commerce website, in 2016. In 2018, they further solidified their online presence through the acquisition of 1Jour1Vin, a private sales e-commerce site. These strategic moves allowed Borie-Manoux to provide a wider range of products to its valued customers. While the company primarily focuses on Fine Wines of Bordeaux, it has successfully diversified its portfolio to cater to evolving customer preferences.

The Castéja family’s legacy is characterized by their multifaceted roles as viticulturists, winemakers, producers, and negotiators of fine wines. Controlling major Bordeaux wine merchant houses such as Borie-Manoux, A. de Luze, and Mähler-Besse, they have nurtured and maintained their independence, making them one of the last prominent independent family groups in Bordeaux. With 100% family ownership since its inception, the Castéja family’s commitment to quality and tradition remains unwavering.

Borie-Manoux proudly presents its wines under the label Beau Rivage, offering value-driven Bordeaux Blanc and Rouge from the Bordeaux Supérieur appellation. Crafted to be fruit-forward, these wines undergo 100 percent tank fermentation and maturation, embodying the essence of Bordeaux’s winemaking expertise.

In conclusion, Borie-Manoux has established itself as a prominent force in Bordeaux’s wine industry, driven by a legacy of excellence and a dedication to delivering remarkable wines to a global audience. With its rich history, impressive châteaux portfolio, and commitment to quality, Borie-Manoux remains a symbol of tradition and innovation in the world of fine wines.
