Since 1927, Protos has been on a mission to uphold its claim of “being first” in the winemaking industry. This attitude of constant improvement, coupled with a deep understanding of the terroir and a vision for the future, has propelled Protos to become a renowned producer of exceptional wines.

The foundations laid by the visionaries of Protos have remained intact and continue to guide the company to this day. These principles have been evident since the beginning, with Protos’ first vintages in 1927 and 1928 winning Gold Medals at the Universal Exposition of Barcelona in 1929.

Remaining true to its roots while embracing the ever-evolving industry, Protos has recently constructed a state-of-the-art winery in Peñafiel. Designed by the prestigious architectural firm Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, in collaboration with Alonso Balaguer y Arquitectos Asociados, this magnificent facility blends the wisdom gained from Protos’ long history with the latest technologies to produce even better and more sustainable wines.

The story of Protos began in 1927 when a group of eleven childhood friends, now grown up and pursuing various professions, came together to celebrate their viticultural heritage and their love for Peñafiel. Their dream extended beyond making good wines; they aimed to revive a forgotten wine region with a rich history. Through their dedication, they not only introduced rustic wines for personal consumption but also put the Ribera del Duero appellation on the global map.

Today, Protos encompasses a community of more than 250 families, all driven by the original goal of producing exceptional wines in an exceptional region. The commitment of the third-generation scions, who continue to work the land with the same passion as their ancestors, has helped Protos thrive. 

Additionally, the knowledge passed down through generations and the extensive research conducted by Protos at each vineyard contribute to the ongoing success of the brand. This community also includes viticulturists, agricultural engineers, and oenologists, all dedicated to constantly improving Protos’ wines and expanding their reach to wine-lovers around the world.

Protos’ winemaking philosophy revolves around harnessing the unique characteristics of each terroir and employing natural and respectful processes. Their rosés and whites are crafted from carefully selected grapes grown in different areas and microclimates, guided by the expertise of their viticulturists. Meanwhile, Protos reds, produced by their inspired oenologists, embody the pure and fresh character of the renowned Tempranillo fruit, combined with the complexity achieved through perfect aging and blending techniques. A meticulous grape sorting process and the selection of the finest terroirs, still worked by the best of Protos’ founder families, contribute to the authentic signature of each vintage.
