Berton Vineyard

Yenda, Australia

In the picturesque subregion of High Eden, nestled within the renowned Barossa Valley in South Australia, lies Berton Vineyards. Established in 1996 by Bob and Cherie Berton, this family-owned winery has become synonymous with perseverance, quality, and a deep respect for the land.

The journey of Berton Vineyards began when Bob and Cherie purchased a block of land on gently rolling hills, situated 450 meters above sea level. With a vision in mind, they set about planting the first vineyard cuttings in the spring of that year. Ten acres were dedicated to Shiraz, while another seven acres were allocated for Chardonnay. However, the challenge they faced was the absence of permanent water. It wasn’t until 1998 when the dam finally filled, providing the much-needed hydration for the vines to flourish.

.

The hydrophobic podsolic soils and the scarcity of water made it difficult for the vines to establish themselves. In those early years, the vines struggled, resembling tiny rootlings. It was during this time that a Swedish friend jokingly referred to it as the “bonsai vineyard.” The name stuck, and it later became the moniker for their premium Shiraz. Although the vines are thriving today, benefitting from the high annual rainfall of High Eden, the name Bonsai serves as a reminder of the winery’s humble beginnings.

As the vineyard expanded and water became plentiful, Bob and Cherie planted additional varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. With a growing reputation for producing exceptional grapes, the decision was made in 2005 to acquire a winery to process the harvest. Joining forces with Jamie Bennett, Paul Bartholomaeus, and James Ceccato, Berton Vineyards was established as a company. The former Southcorp winery in Yenda was purchased, and the team relocated to their new winemaking home in November 2005.

.

The early days at the winery were challenging, with a small team working tirelessly to crush and process a staggering 13,000 tonnes of grapes during the 2006 vintage. However, their determination and commitment paid off, setting the stage for future success. Over the years, Berton Vineyards has cultivated strong relationships with growers in the Riverina region, collaborating to source high-quality fruit that forms the foundation of their annual grape intake.

The winemaking process at Berton Vineyards involves crushing and fermenting each vineyard’s produce in batches, carefully grading and blending to create wines that showcase the best of their respective regions. From the Riverina, grapes contribute to the Outback Jack, Foundstone, and Head Over Heels ranges, while the Reserve and Metal ranges draw from vineyards in Coonawarra, Padthaway, Adelaide Hills, Swan Hill, Riverland, and Barossa. This dedication to sourcing fruit from select vineyards ensures a consistent and exceptional product.

.

Moreover, Berton Vineyards has implemented sustainable practices within their winemaking process. The use of ion exchange technology for cold stabilizing their non-premium wines has resulted in significant benefits. It reduces the amount of tartaric acid needed for pH correction, leading to cost savings and also eliminates the need for cold stabilization, resulting in substantial energy savings.

Berton Vineyards stands as a testament to the perseverance and unwavering commitment to quality displayed by Bob and Cherie Berton. From the challenging early years to the establishment of a thriving winery, their legacy lives on in each bottle produced. With their continued dedication to sustainability and their enduring partnerships with growers, Berton Vineyards remains a beacon of excellence in the world of Australian winery.
