Azelia
Piedmont, Italy
Established in the enchanting Langhe region of Barolo, Azelia stands as a testament to five generations of winemaking passion and dedication. Founded in 1920 in the charming town of Castiglione Falletto, Azelia is a historic and family-run winery that has become synonymous with the essence of Piedmont’s extraordinary wine culture.
For a century, Azelia has cultivated vineyards with unwavering devotion, focusing exclusively on the three native local grape varieties: Dolcetto, Barbera, and, most notably, Nebbiolo. These varieties allow Azelia to produce DOC and DOCG wines that showcase the typicity, tradition, and rich history of the region’s renowned hills, which have earned UNESCO World Heritage recognition.

A journey through Azelia’s history is a journey through the struggles and triumphs of the Scavino family. It began in 1920 when Cavalier Lorenzo Scavino, amidst the challenging conditions of early 20th-century Piedmont, started vinifying grapes from the family’s vineyards. His son Alfonso embraced the vision by enthusiastically bottling the wines and, with the tenacity and determination of Lorenzo, successfully exported them for the first time.
Today, Azelia spans 16 hectares and produces an average of 85,000 bottles per year. Luigi, with over 40 harvests of experience, leads the way, supported by his wife Lorella and their son Lorenzo, representing the fifth generation of dedicated winemakers. The family’s hands-on approach is essential, allowing for meticulous attention to every step of the production process.

In the vineyards, Azelia exercises great care, nurturing old vines that yield only a small number of grapes. Through green harvesting, the team further reduces yields, ensuring fruit selection, uniform ripening, and impeccable quality. This meticulous approach continues in the cellar, where tradition is respected, and attention to detail is paramount.
Most vineyard operations are performed by hand, as the expert eye and skilled hands of Azelia’s team are crucial in achieving the highest grape quality. In an extraordinary commitment to quality, no vine is replaced until it reaches the end of its natural life, recognizing the significance of older vines in producing exceptional grapes with concentrated flavors.
.

.
With over 75% of their vineyards dedicated to Nebbiolo, and Dolcetto and Barbera covering approximately 5 hectares, Azelia showcases the true potential of these grape varieties. Through a harmonious marriage of tradition and innovation, Azelia continues to craft wines that embody the essence of Piedmont’s winemaking heritage.
For wine lovers and connoisseurs alike, Azelia is a timeless symbol of excellence, a testament to 100 years of devotion and a celebration of the beauty that emerges from the Piedmontese terroir.
