Attilio Ghisolfi
Bussia, Italy
The Attilio Ghisolfi winery has experienced a remarkable transformation over the years, propelling its wines from local recognition to global acclaim. It was during the late 1980s and early 1990s that the Langa del Barolo region underwent significant changes, establishing itself as a prominent destination for eno-gastronomic tourism. This period coincided with the entry of a new generation into the Ghisolfi family business, marking a turning point in their winemaking journey.
In 1988, Gianmarco Ghisolfi joined the company, and with his arrival came a shift in the production structure. Previously, the winery had a mixed economy, with a focus on fruit and wine grape cultivation, but bottled wine production remained minimal. Under Gianmarco’s guidance, the company redirected its efforts towards producing bottled wines of exceptional quality. The conversion of orchards into vineyards became a priority, and new plots of land ideal for growing Nebbiolo, the iconic grape of the region, were acquired. The goal was clear: to create wines that would be unrivalled in their excellence.
.
Throughout this transformative journey, the Ghisolfi family emphasized the importance of the wine itself, rather than elaborate label designs. They believed that the wine should speak for itself. However, with the changing times and the emergence of a more visually-driven consumer culture, they recognized the need to adapt their communication strategies. In 2020, they decided to convey their growth trajectory and aspirations through metaphorical imagery on their labels.
Nebbiolo, the grape variety that propelled their success, is symbolically depicted as a hot air balloon, slowly ascending and carrying with it the challenges and uncertainties faced along the path of growth. The figure of a small and blurred man represents the hardships overcome. The star, an emblem of dreams and goals, serves as a representation of their ultimate objective. In their most exceptional wines, where quality is paramount, the label portrays a man climbing the slope of the grape, reaching out to grasp the star.
.
Environmental sustainability has also played a crucial role in the Ghisolfi winery’s operations. They have been practicing integrated agriculture for several years, focusing on minimal environmental impact and promoting biodiversity. Organic fertilizers and herbaceous essences are used to enrich the soil, creating a favorable habitat for pollinating insects and a thriving bacterial flora.
Phytosanitary treatments are employed sparingly, based on meticulous data analysis and with environmentally friendly products. This approach ensures healthy grapes and diverse strains of yeast for natural fermentations, eliminating the need for selected yeasts.
.
As part of their commitment to sustainability, the winery recently obtained certification through the Environmental Sustainability System (SQNPI), further validating their agronomic and oenological practices. The symbol of a bee now graces their labels, symbolizing their dedication to preserving and protecting the environment.
The story of Attilio Ghisolfi winery is one of evolution, perseverance, and a deep appreciation for the land. Through their unwavering pursuit of quality, sustainable practices, and the art of winemaking, they have established themselves as a shining star in the world of wine. With every bottle, they invite wine lovers to savour not only the exquisite flavours but also the dedication and passion that have gone into creating these exceptional wines.
