Albet i Noya

Barcelona, Spain

Albet i Noya, a renowned winery in the Penedès region of Spain, has been leading the way in organic farming practices since 1978. Their journey has been anything but easy, with many doubting the feasibility of organic wines. However, fueled by desire, consistency, audacity, creativity, and a deep respect for their surroundings, Albet i Noya has achieved remarkable success and recognition.

The story of Albet i Noya dates back to 1903 when Joan Albet i Rovirosa, the great great grandfather of the current generation, arrived in the Penedès region during the devastating phylloxera crisis. He settled in Sant Pau d’Ordal and became a tenant farmer at the Can Vendrell de la Codina estate. Since then, the Albet family has lovingly cultivated and protected the vines that now form the heart and soul of their wines for five generations.

.

In the late 1970s, an unexpected opportunity presented itself to the Albet i Noya family. A Danish company was searching for an organic wine grower in the Penedès region. Organic wines were relatively unheard of at the time, but the family’s curiosity and restless spirit led them to embrace this adventure. Thus, they embarked on a groundbreaking journey into organic winemaking, defying conventional practices and blazing a trail for others to follow.

The winery itself is a testament to their commitment to innovation and tradition. The modernist winery, designed by Josep Maria Pericas in 1925, is located on the Can Vendrell de la Codina estate, just outside Sant Pau d’Ordal. Over the years, Albet i Noya has expanded and modernized its facilities, including the Xapallà cellar built in 2004, where their red wines age and are bottled.

.

The adjacent Era cellar is equipped with cutting-edge technology, allowing them to produce their top-range wines separately and with utmost care. Additionally, they have acquired new vineyards such as Can Milà Estate in Lavern and Can Simó in the Mediona area, further expanding their winemaking capabilities.

The main house, dating back to 1872, serves as the welcoming hub for visitors. It houses a reception area, a shop, and a majestic hall that can accommodate up to 50 people. The surrounding garden offers breathtaking views, making it an ideal setting for tastings, lunches, and various events. The neighboring tenant’s farmhouse, dating back to 1400, now serves as the winery’s offices. Albet i Noya aims to create a warm and inviting atmosphere, ensuring that every visitor feels at home, as they are an integral part of the winery’s adventure.

.

Art enthusiasts will be captivated by the wine staircase, a magnificent creation by artist Joan Raven. Adorning all four floors of the main house’s staircase, this artwork depicts the vineyard’s vegetative cycle and the winemaking process with a touch of surrealism. It beautifully portrays the journey from the land and the origin of the grapes to the joyous experience of wine appreciation.

Albet i Noya’s dedication to organic farming, innovation, and artistic expression has earned them a well-deserved place of prominence in the world of winemaking. Their commitment to producing exceptional organic wines while respecting nature is an inspiration to winemakers and wine enthusiasts alike. As pioneers in their field, Albet i Noya continues to shape the future of winemaking and leaves a lasting legacy for generations to come.
