Abadía Retuerta

Wine Leaders' Choice

Valladolid, Spain

The Abbey of Santa María de Retuerta, founded in 1146, has been transformed into one of Spain’s most luxurious hotels. The late-Romanesque and Gothic-style monastery, located in Sardón de Duero, was once the national headquarters of the Premonstratensian Order and has been declared an official Site of Cultural Interest. Now, it houses a five-star hotel complex, including a Michelin-starred restaurant and winery.

Abadía Retuerta Winery produces terroirs-based white, rosé, and red wines in both classic and experimental styles. The estate covers 700 hectares, with 192 hectares of vineyards split into 54 small plots along the Douro River. The majority is planted with Tempranillo, along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Surprisingly age-worthy blends are made from white varieties, including Sauvignon Blanc and Verdejo.

Opened in 2012 after four years of restoration, Le Domaine’s 30 rooms feature jewel-colored velvet sofas, four-poster beds, and full butler service. The flagship restaurant, Refectorio, holds both a Michelin Star and a Michelin Green Star for its ethical and environmental standards. Elsewhere, Vinoteca is a more intimate wine bar, while the newly created Calicata Terroir Bar immerses guests in the local soils and materials while enjoying food and wine. Private tours of the estate are available, along with cycling, horse riding, stargazing, and yoga. Recovery at El Santuario Wellness & Spa includes a ‘Spa Sommelier Experience.’
